A 47-year-old Brazilian man died today while surfing in Nazare, central Portugalone of the most popular destinations for sports fans.
The unfortunate man lost consciousness while doing so surfing and rescuers immediately rushed to bring him to shore. Although cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted, he was pronounced dead.
According to imgs cited by the French Agency (AFP) and relayed by the Athens News Agency, the victim is Marcio Freire, a veteran surfer who lived for about 20 years in Hawaii.
Every winter the northern beach of Nazaré attracts thousands of surfers who aspire to tame the huge waves formed by a fault in the seabed. There German surfer Sebastian Steidner set a record on October 29, 2020, taming a wave of 26.2 meters.
Several accidents have been recorded in the area since American Garrett McNamara made it famous among surfers in the early 2010s, but today’s was the first surfer death at the famous Nazaré beach.
