A former soldier who had opened fire on police in France has been arrested

Authorities in southwestern France had launched a manhunt to locate an armed ex-military man who was eventually arrested after being seriously injured in an exchange of fire with security forces.

As of Sunday, police with trained dogs were “combing” the forests in the Dornon area, looking for the suspect who opened fire on police officers who responded to an incident of domestic violence.

“The man was wounded in retaliation (by security forces),” Dordogne prefect Frederic Perissa told a news conference.

Authorities said the suspect was a heavily armed ex military, who were believed to have carried a long-range shotgun.

The 1,800 residents of the village of Le Larned-Saint-Lazare in Dordogne were instructed to stay at home and schools were closed as police helicopters searched the area.

Police said that the man went to his ex-partner’s house around midnight Saturday to Sunday, and threatened her new partner. Police officers who rushed to the scene came under fire. There were no reports of injuries, according to Reuters and French Agency and rebroadcasts the Athenian News Agency.

Andre Petiglio, commander of the regional police force, said the suspect was used to working alone and could remain in hiding for several days.

Special forces, assisted by more than 300 gendarmes, police dogs, 7 helicopters and 11 armored vehicles, have been searching for the man since Saturday.
