A major fire that broke out on a railway bridge in Southwark, central London, which forced the suspension of trains in the area and the evacuation of some buildings, has now been brought under control, the London Fire Service said.
The fire service, which sent 10 fire engines and about 70 firefighters to the scene, said there were no reports of injuries and that an investigation into the cause of the fire had begun.
Video footage posted by the fire service on Twitter showed plumes of smoke billowing from the road that runs under the railway bridge, where the fire service said some vehicles were “fully engulfed in flames”.
Southwark and London Bridge train stations were closed.
“There is a lot of smoke from the fire and those who live or work in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed,” Fire Station Commander Wayne Johnson said in a statement posted on the fire department’s website.
Trains on the London Underground’s Jubilee line have also been affected by the fire, while the London Fire Brigade has confirmed that smoke coming from a platform at London Bridge tube station has been confirmed to be from the fire on the railway bridge.
Rail Kent & Sussex said on Twitter that although the fire had been brought under control, it was still burning.
“Once it is safe we ​​will inspect the site but for now there is no change to services with diversions and cancellations across South London,” he said.
