A night out

A friend my age calls me at 2 in the morning. He tells me that they have celebrated a son’s birthday. Is happy. They ordered dinner from a restaurant. “Luxury,” he tells me. “I paid,” he adds.

I know my friend and I know there is nothing extraordinary about him paying his family for dinner. I don’t have the head to talk much, and what I want is to sleep, not to talk. But all of a sudden he blurts out: “I don’t know whether to pay with euros, with dollars, with cryptocurrencies or with gold. What do you think?”

He explains to me that he has a Visa card sent to him from Austria, a normal, debit card, which works ‘normally’, but with which he can pay with “digital assets”, he tells me, namely “precious metals, cryptocurrencies and things like that. ” “I mean, I can end this night of partying by paying in gold and leaving the tip with a little money.”

I get him to shut up and go to sleep. But I have awakened and, instead of counting sheep, I see ingots and nuggets of gold, silver, palladium … And I do not sleep.

To fall asleep, I read an old newspaper. The CNMV and the Bank of Spain advise prudence when handling cryptocurrencies due to their volatility, complexity, and lack of clarity. In the same statement, they also admit that cryptocurrencies and their technology can be elements that revitalize and modernize the financial system in the coming years.

I reread a book I wrote 3 years ago, in which I talked about volatility, among other things. He said that the price of bitcoin was fluctuating “wildly.” And as an example, he added: “Between one thousand and twenty thousand dollars in a short time.” An asset that offers great opportunities, but its nature must be known. As I write this, on February 14, 2021, bitcoin is at 40,230.77 euros, almost an 800% appreciation since I wrote that book.

Pataphysics. My children call that what happens when one day you remember something, then you meet a friend who tells you about that something; You turn on the TV and they are talking about the same thing.

Pataphysics. Suddenly, cryptocurrencies are being talked about again. Something happens. What my friend told me at 2 in the morning coincides with what another tells me, that he has charged in bitcoins, according to what he certifies by scanning and sending me a very shabby piece of paper, with which he goes to a bitcoin ATM, he gets the password and get the money. Before, in euros. Now, exaggerating, whatever you want.

But since I don’t know what will come after the precious metals and I want to prevent my friend from calling me to inform me how he has paid for the last family spree he has organized and ask me to clarify any questions, I disconnect the mobile at lie down.
