To take measures to save the decoration and mosaics of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul “from the destruction and vandalism that have occurred in the last two years”, as “it is the most emblematic Church of Orthodoxy, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site “, ND MEP Manolis K. Kefalogiannis asks the European Commission, with a related question that he submitted.
Specifically, after mentioning that “two years ago, on July 20, 2020, by decision of the Turkish President, Hagia Sophia was turned into a Muslim mosque, although since 1934 Kemal Atatürk, in the context of the modernization of Turkey, had turned it into a museum” and that “on July 24, 2020, the first Muslim prayer took place inside the Hagia Sophia in the presence of the Turkish political leadership”, two years ago, “the emblematic Byzantine church has been faced with continuous vandalism and destruction” and “last April there were strong reactions cause the images of destruction in the Imperial Gate of Hagia Sophia”, while “the destruction of the marbles, mosaics and walls of the temple continues”.
He also underlines that “one more destruction is coming to be added to those that have already taken place since the Hagia Sophia was converted into an Islamic mosque, this time the decoration was removed from the Imperial Gate”.
For these reasons, Mr. Kefalogiannis asks the European Commission if “it is aware of the vandalism and destruction” and “what measures it intends to take to avoid the destruction and vandalism of the mosaics and the decoration of the Saint Sophia”.
