A year of vaccines, what has changed?

They called it V Day. It was December 27, 2020, the first day of vaccination in Italy. Exactly one year ago, the first health workers received the first dose of the vaccine. After them came the over 80s, the guests of the RSA, the fragile people and then it was the turn of the whole population. Vaccinations are now open for ages 5 and up. There were two presidents of the Council and as many extraordinary commissioners for the emergency: from Conte to Draghi, from Arcuri to Figliuolo.

On that day, the first 7342 injections of the Italian vaccination campaign against Covid-19 were made, a campaign that led Italy to excel: our country is the 15th in the world for completion of the primary vaccination cycle, ie the first two doses, in Europe it is in fifth place after Portugal, Malta, Spain and Denmark. On 25 December in Italy the daily doses per million inhabitants were 6472, against the EU average of 5,879.

In these 12 months 108,226,482 doses have been administered, which have led to over 46 million people, over 12, with two doses and more than 17 million who have already done the third. 78% of the population completed the primary vaccination course. The percentage of those who have already received the third dose does not reach 30%.

Also counting how many got the vaccine monodose of Johnson & Johnson and those who have had a dose only after having had the disease over 80% of the Italian population is protected.

There are four vaccines authorized in Italy at the height of the vaccination campaign: Pfizer-Biontech, Moderna, AstraZeneca e Johnson&Johnson (the latter two set aside for possible adverse reactions in certain age groups and for limited coverage). Pfizer and Moderna vaccines use mRna technology, with messenger RNA molecules that carry the Covid-19 Spike protein to the cell. The other two are based on the viral vector using a modified version of the chimpanzee’s adenovirus that can no longer replicate. Only now has it been approved Novavax, protein vaccine.

The difference compared to a year ago is not in the number of cases, which varies according to the number of swabs made. The difference made by vaccines is seen in hospital numbers. The data are from the last days of December: 8,722 hospitalized against 24,546 in 2020, average deaths increased from 551 in the last days of December 2020 against 135 in 2021. Last year there were 2624 on average hospitalized in intensive care at the end of December against 1023 this year.

From 1 November to 22 December 2020 there were over 30 thousand deaths related to Covid, in the same period of 2021 the deaths were less than 4 thousand. According to experts, the difference is in vaccines. Data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità say that today in Italy, the risk of intensive care for the unvaccinated than for those with the third dose it is: 85 times higher for those over 80; 12.8 times greater for 60-79; 6.1 times greater for 40-59. In the period between 29 October and 28 November, the death rate among the unvaccinated was 23.4 per 100,000 people. Among the vaccinated, this percentage is much lower: 1.6 for those who received the third dose and 3.1 for those who received two.
