Chairman of the State Security Service of Abkhazia (SGB) Dmitry Kuchuberia said that over the past four days, agency employees have confiscated 194 devices for mining cryptocurrency. Mining is prohibited in this partially recognized country.

Kuchuberia spoke about this at a meeting with the head of the Republican Headquarters for Ensuring Energy Security and Combating Illegal Connection to Electric Networks, Acting Prime Minister Valery Bganba. The head of the State Security Service clarified that from December 10 to 13, measures to seize mining devices were carried out in Ochamchira, Gudauta, Gagra districts and the city of Sukhum.

Acting Minister of Energy and Transport Jansukh Nanba said that mining farms consume 10-15% of electricity in Abkhazia, despite the fact that they are prohibited from doing business. Therefore, theoretically, miners may not pay for the electricity they use, Nanba is outraged.

In the fall, electricity consumption in Abkhazia increased sharply, which led to problems with energy supply. The water level in the dam of the Ingur hydroelectric power station is at a critical level, so the station is operating in emergency mode – the generated energy is barely enough for three hours a day. From November 1, Abkhazia was going to purchase electricity from Russia to partially cover the energy deficit, but there is not enough money for this.

Last week, the Abkhazian authorities were forced to temporarily shut down the Internet to combat miners, explaining their actions by a lack of electricity and forced shutdowns of kindergartens and schools. Recently, acting Prime Minister Valery Bganba called for strengthening the fight against mining so that the republic’s energy sector does not face the threat of an emergency.
