About 16 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN

About 16 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian assistance and more than 6 million are still displaced inside the country, the UN humanitarian coordinator in the war-torn country said in Kyiv today.

“Nearly 16 million people in Ukraine today are in need of humanitarian assistance: water, food, health care,” Osnat Lubrani told a news conference as Russia entered its fifth month of war.

“More than 6 million people are still internally displaced. About 5 million people have now managed to return home, but many know they may be forced to leave again,” she added.

According to the International Organization for Migration, this number of returns applies to both internally displaced persons and those returning from abroad.

According to Lubrani, more than 5.3 million Ukrainians have fled abroad as refugees.

“What we do know is that the number we have of nearly 5,000 civilians killed and more than 5,000 injured is only part of the horrific reality,” she said.

“I can’t talk about specific numbers of damaged hospitals, schools and homes, but we know there are thousands. We just can’t confirm the exact numbers yet,” she said.
