The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says many people have been killed and injured in an attack on a busy open-air market in eastern Afghanistan today, although Taliban officials have said they can only confirm 10 injuries.
“UNAMA condemns the attack this morning on a crowded market in Nagahar province, which killed and injured dozens of people – including some children,” UNAMA said on its Twitter account.
“Ongoing attacks targeting civilians across Afghanistan must stop immediately.”
Qurayshi Badlun, the Taliban’s media and intelligence chief for Nagahar, confirmed that an explosion had taken place, but said the target was unclear.
“We are confirming ten wounded, we are not confirming the dead,” he said.
Since taking power in August, the Taliban have said they have increased security in the country and removed threats from militants, although international officials and analysts say the threat of armed action remains.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in recent months.
Deadly bombings have taken place in the country since Friday, including one targeting a Shiite mosque in the capital Kabul, raising concerns in the international community about the recent escalation of violence in the country.
