Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, will join her husband and heir to the throne, Prince William, to welcome the Emir of Qatar to the United Kingdom on Tuesday (03), according to Buckingham Palace. The commitment is the princess’s most important since she revealed that she had completed chemotherapy treatment.
In June, Kate was forced to miss a state visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan to the United Kingdom in June, while she was undergoing treatment.
His central role in the upcoming visit will be seen by many as a sign of his strong recovery following the announcement in September of a phased return to duty.
During the state visit, William and Kate are expected to greet Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, accompanied by his wife Jawaher, on Tuesday morning, before heading to the Horse Guards parade in St. James’s Park for a ceremonial reception and interpretation of the Qatari national anthem.
King Charles and Queen Camilla will join the four royals in a carriage procession along London’s The Mall to Buckingham Palace, which will be decorated with dozens of Qatari flags. Processions like these are typically escorted by mounted soldiers of the Household cavalry.
The extravagant procession will be followed by lunch at Buckingham Palace and a cultural exhibition.
The exhibition, organized by the Royal Collection trust and the Turquoise Mountain foundation — an organization founded by King Charles in 2006, when he was Prince of Wales, to protect at-risk cultural heritage around the world — will display items related to Qatar.
In the afternoon, the emir and his wife will tour Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster, where they will meet members of the House of Lords and the British parliament.
One event Kate will not be attending is the state banquet on Tuesday night, where King Charles and the emir will give speeches. Typically, around 150 VIPs with cultural and diplomatic ties to the honored country are invited to the party.
Kate’s planned absence from the gala shouldn’t be cause for alarm, however.
She also missed the annual Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace last week, held to honor foreign diplomats in London.
Despite her absence from the meeting, a royal source described Kate’s upcoming engagements as “good news.”
She will round off the week by performing her annual carol concert at Westminster Abbey on Friday night, which will focus on “how much we need each other, especially at the most difficult times in our lives”.
The princess invited children who survived the knife attack in Southport earlier this year, and their families, to the show, Kensington Palace confirmed to CNN on Thursday (28).
