The Town festival, held by the same organizers as Rock in Rio, announced Foo Fighters as the first headliner for its debut edition. The event is scheduled to take place on the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 9th and 10th of September, in São Paulo.

The presentation, on September 9, will mark the return of Dave Grohl’s group to Brazil after having canceled the show they would do at Lollapalooza Brazil last year due to the sudden death of drummer Taylor Hawkins.

“The announcement of the first headliner for the first edition of a new festival is a moment that will go down in history! Only those who did it and who lived through 1985, in the first edition of Rock in Rio, know and will never forget it”, said Roberto Medina, president of Rock in Rio and The Town, in a press release.

“At that time, we announced Ozzy and Queen as the first headliners and, the day after Rock in Rio’s anniversary, we have the great pleasure of creating yet another unique moment, on an emblematic date, and announcing this group that, I have no doubt, will deliver a very exciting presentation. The Town’s dream is taking shape,” added Medina.

Foo Fighters will return to Brazil with the tour of “Medicine at Midnight”, the band’s most recent album, released in February 2021.

Death of Taylor Hawkins and Lolla Canceled

In the early hours of Saturday, March 26, 2022, the Foo Fighters posted the shocking statement on their social media announcing “the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins”.

The drummer was in Bogotá, Colombia, touring Latin America with the group, which would perform on Sunday at Lollapalooza Brasil, in São Paulo.

“His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live on in us forever,” continues the text.

According to the statement, Hawkins is survived by his wife and children. Foo Fighters asked for privacy and respect during this “unimaginably difficult time”.

Due to his unexpected death, the band has completely canceled all scheduled concerts around the world, including a performance at the Grammys.

In honor of Taylor Hawkins, Lolla organizers improvisedly set up a special show with several national artists, led by rapper Emicida.

“Our hearts vibrate that night and send the best energies to Taylor’s family and the Foo Fighters family”, said Emicida to the 100 thousand mourning fans.

The festival actually closed with an emotional video of the Foo Fighters performing “Best of You” at the 2012 show. The audience that stayed until the end sang as if the band were there.

With a fireworks display and a spotlight illuminating only the drums on stage, Lollapalooza ended their tribute to Taylor Hawkins and the 2022 edition.
