After extreme drought, see what the weather is like in October

The month of October should be marked by above average rainfall in different parts of Brazil and more hot flashes in the Central-West, according to a forecast released by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

After one of the most extreme droughts ever faced, the country is expected to record rainfall again, but unusual heat waves still persist in states like Mato Grosso.

October begins in the midst of the eighth heat wave that hits the country this year. Temperatures already started to rise last Sunday (29), and are expected to rise in parts of the South, Southeast and Central-West until at least next Friday (4).

The expectation is that the arrival of a cold front, on the night of next Wednesday (2), will begin to bring a mass of cold air that should cause a slight drop in temperatures in the South and part of the Southeast region at the end of this week. .

Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, the interior of São Paulo and Minas Gerais are also expected to experience a high number of days of excessive heat in October.

The gradual return of rains should occur from the second half of October. According to the forecast, rainfall should be above average in much of the South region, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and south of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

In southwestern Amazonas, Pará and northern Rondônia — regions heavily affected by drought — precipitation will also be slightly above average. In a large part of the Northeast, northern Minas Gerais and Goiás, Mato Grosso, Tocantins and Pará, rainfall is expected to be close to and below the climatological average.

Risk of severe weather in the South

According to MetSul, October is typically a stormier month in the south of the country due to the meeting of cold and hot air masses, in addition to the presence of low pressure areas.

Thunderstorms begin to become much more frequent in the region as the dry season gradually comes to an end and humidity increases in the atmosphere, which, with the warm air, favors more storms.

Some early mornings, however, can still be cold and have lows close to or below 10 °C in many cities in southern Brazil, while the afternoons tend to be intensely hot on some days.
