US President Joe Biden called the Nashville school shooting that killed six people, including three children, “a family’s worst nightmare”. “It’s heartbreaking.”
The president, speaking at the Small Business Administration’s Women in Business Meeting on Monday, said more needs to be done to stop gun violence.
“It is destroying our communities,” he said.
The shooting took place at Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville police officials said the shooter was armed with at least two assault rifles and a handgun.
Biden urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, saying “we need to do more to protect our schools.”
“The time has come to start making more progress,” he said.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin echoed the president’s remarks, saying he strongly supports “laws to ban civilians from using assault weapons and close the loopholes in our background check system.”
He urged lawmakers to reach a bipartisan solution, which is highly unlikely given the American political landscape: a Senate with a thin Democratic majority, and a Republican-led chamber.
Last year, the Senate passed the “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act,” the first legislation to address gun violence since 1994. The legislation fell just short of what Democrats wanted, including their hopes of banning assault weapons.
