Agribusiness interests are also at stake at the Summit of the Americas, says expert

President Jair Bolsonaro is due to meet US President Joe Biden this Thursday (9) at the Summit of the Americas. The coordinator of FAAP’s international relations course, Fernanda Magnotta, told CNN the interests of agribusiness is also at stake at the meeting.

“Good relations are desirable and are of interest to Brazil, there are businessmen traveling to the Summit of the Americas, there will be a meeting of CEOs of companies, the interest of agribusiness is also at stake, not to mention issues related to infrastructure, the energy transition”, he evaluated.

Magnotta added that “despite the differences between the leaders, the two countries are longtime partners and there are pro-business interests that push this agenda down the path of greater pragmatism.”

However, she states that the climate of the negotiation as a whole can be affected with other issues, involving the climate and democratic agenda.

According to the expert, there is an expectation that the Brazilian president will not be put in a tight spot, but it is not known to what extent the American government is willing to comply with this expectation.

Magnotta evaluated, however, that Biden’s official agenda has main themes of the meeting with the Brazilian involving the issue of the environment and the topic of Covid.

“No one knows if, in fact, he [Biden] will not touch on these thorny matters.”
