Air freight registers a 20% increase in Brazil in 2022, according to a survey

Signaling an economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic Covid-19 the Brazilian sector of air freight recorded an increase of approximately 20% in the volume of imported shipments in the first four months of 2022, when compared to the same period of the previous year.

Data is exclusive to CNN obtained from the three main airport terminals in the country – Tom Jobim International Airport (Galleon ), in Rio de Janeiro, and guarulhos and Viracopos, in São Paulo.

Between January and April, the Galeão cargo terminal received 9,700 tons of products imported . This is a 23% growth compared to the same months in 2021, when they reached 7,800 tons.

The value of shipments also rose between the periods: from US$ 2.6 billion to US$ 3 billion – impacted by the appreciation of the dollar against the real. The financial result is 14% higher compared to the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the data, the main goods that arrived at Galeão in the first four months of 2022 were from the air transport industry, chemical inputs, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and petroleum, refined input and destined for the production of fuels.

Guarulhos also recorded an increase in the number of cargo imports in the first months of 2022, according to data advanced to the CNN .

The country’s main terminal received almost 52 thousand tons of products between January and April, against 48 thousand tons in the same period last year.

The volume of freight in Guarulhos already exceeds pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, for example, the arrival of 50 thousand tons of products was registered. Machinery, pharmaceuticals and automotive parts are among the products that most arrived at the airport.

Viracopos International Airport, in São Paulo, also has better numbers than those recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among the segments highlighted in the year are technology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, metal mechanics, clothing, footwear, fruits and auto parts.

Import volume grew by more than 10% in 2022, compared to the previous year, due to the economic recovery after the pandemic.

And, if it depends on the federal government, the number of imports will increase even more. This is because, in the last week, the Ministry of Economy reduced import tariff on 11 products to try to stop the increase in the price of these items and, consequently, increase consumption in the domestic market.

Among the products that had their taxes reduced are steel rebars, widely used in civil construction. Sulfuric steel, essential in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, also appears in the list of items.

“The end of the restriction against Covid-19 and the economic recovery end up demanding more products that come from abroad, causing this sector to register a positive moment. It is worth noting that the results would be infinitely better if we had controlled inflation and a lower interest rate. This current scenario affects a little the evolution of the market and, finally, the more intense consumption by the people”, emphasizes the economist Fernando Zilber.
