The community of Latin American and Caribbean states (Celac) will hold an emergency meeting of presidents on Thursday (30) to discuss the deportations of immigrants in the United States by Donald Trump’s new government.
The meeting was summoned in “urgent character” by Honduras, which exercises the rotary presidency of the bloc, composed of 33 countries in the region.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to talk to assistants, on Monday (27), about his eventual participation-albeit remotely-and take stock of the episodes involving the deportation of Latin American immigrants in recent days .
The Celac meeting is being organized on a hybrid basis, but the tendency in the government is that at least Chancellor Mauro Vieira is oriented to travel to Honduras, according to reports made to CNN .
In a statement issued on Sunday (26), the Honduran government warned the block members that the meeting agenda will be focused on three points:
- Migration
- Environment
- Latin American and Caribbean Unit
The statement informs that the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has already confirmed participation in person.
Petro barred, this Sunday (26), the landing of an American plane with colombians deported. He announced that the country will send its own aircraft to collect expelled immigrants from the United States.
In retaliation, Trump decided to apply 25% import rates on all Colombian products and suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of the country.
Petro also raised import rates to American goods to the same extent and attacked Trump on his social networks.
For now there are no phone call out between Lula and Petro to discuss the situation. The Brazilian president did not talk about the deportations of Brazilians in recent days and left demonstrations by Itamaraty and the Ministry of Justice, which issued official notes.
Brazil left Celac, under the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and returned to the block in 2023, in the first year of Lula’s current term.
