Alexandre Schwartsman: Inflation is already widespread and persistent

THE CNN Specialist in economics Alexandre Schwartsman commented, this Friday (28), about the country’s economic scenario based on inflation and employment data released by the IBGE at the beginning of the year.

Regarding inflation, Schwartsman stated that we should not observe a value like last year. “We should reach a rate of around 5% this year. That doesn’t mean it’s low inflation. Compared to what is expected for the rest of the world, it is relatively high.”

“We cannot forget that the Central Bank (BC) has a target of an index of 3.5% for this year. If the threshold exceeds 5%, this means that the BC will once again have to write a letter explaining the result”, he said.

For Schwartsman, with the results we have, it is possible to observe the spread of inflation. Although the result of the IPCA-15 has “registered a drop in fuel prices, all the rest of the items analyzed rose”.

Inflation is no longer limited to food, energy, it is already widespread and persistent

THE CNN Specialist also commented on the unemployment rate in the country. This Friday (28), the IBGE released the new result of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad). The data show that the unemployment rate dropped to 11.6% in the quarter from September to November.

Schwartsman highlighted that the “labor market recovery that is being captured by Pnad should also weaken in the wake of the economic slowdown”.

Finally, the CNN Specialist assessed that, according to the data released, “the composition of employment suggests that we have a greater weight in the informal sector”.
