Almost 50 thousand women were murdered in Brazil in 10 years, says Atlas of Violence

Data from the Atlas of Violence, released this Tuesday (18), shows that almost 50,000 women were murdered in Brazil between 2012 and 2022. The numbers show that at least 48,289 died during this period. In 2022 alone, the number of women killed was 3,806.

The document also highlights that 221,240 women of all ages were victims of some type of aggression. The majority of assaults, 144,285, take place within the family, falling within the scope of domestic violence.

“Data from the Violence Atlas shows us that Brazilian women are exposed to violence from birth to the end of their lives,” explains Samira Bueno, executive director of the Brazilian Public Security Forum.

Sexual violence

Girls aged 10 to 14 are the biggest victims of sexual violence in Brazil. The data appears in the Violence Atlas, released this Tuesday (18) by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP).

According to the document, there is an “epidemic” of sexual violence against girls in the country. In 2022, sexual violence affected 49.6% of girls in this age group in the country. The numbers were collected from the records of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan), of the Ministry of Health. In the age group between 0 and 9 years, cases of sexual violence are 30.4%.
