Almost a bomber. US first loaded five cruise missiles on F-15 fighter

For the first time, five AGM-158 Joint cruise missiles, or JASSM, were loaded onto the US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle as part of an experimental concept. Writes about this The Drive.

It is reported that the F-15E has not yet flown with such a large number of cruise missiles – it is planned to continue testing with the aim of more than doubling the existing load of the fighter.

The AGM-158 JASSM is an American high-precision air-to-surface cruise missile developed by Lockheed Martin Corporation. Designed to engage important, highly protected stationary and relocatable targets, in any weather conditions and at any time of the day, from distances outside the coverage area of enemy air defense systems.

“The configuration is designed to allow the flexible Strike Eagle to replace bombers in certain missions,” the newspaper writes.

The plans of the leadership of the American Air Force are to try to use a group of fighters instead of one bomber for the use of a JASSM salvo.

“This will reduce the size and complexity of the strike package, and also distribute the mission’s risk to the forces,” the military said. As journalists write, this concept will allow the F-15E to independently carry out tasks in the fire zone, if necessary using air-to-air missiles.

The high range of the AGM-158 Joint missiles ensures that US Air Force aircraft do not need to enter, for example, western Syria to engage targets.

In the future, the US Air Force is likely to receive a version of the JASSM with an even longer range – it is assumed that the missiles will be able to hit targets at distances of up to 1000 miles.
