AMD is working on a completely new type of processor. FPGA will be integrated into it

At the end of last year, AMD closed its largest deal: acquiring Xilinx for $ 35 billion.

Xilinx, we recall, is one of the market leaders in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). And now it became known that AMD has applied for a patent, which describes a processor with FPGA elements.

Speech specifically about the CPU with integrated FPGA blocks. For example, Intel has a Xeon Gold 6138P containing a classic processor and FPGA, but these are two separate dies in one package.

Returning to the AMD patent, there are a number of interesting features that the company could implement in its product.

For example, a CPU can include one or more Reprogrammable Execution Units (PEU), that is, there is room for performance scaling. The decoding and sending unit of the CPU automatically sends specialized instructions to the corresponding PEUs.

The PEU can also accelerate Int or FP workloads if required. In addition, the PEU can be virtualized while maintaining the security features of the system.

Importantly, the PEU can be reprogrammed on the fly, which means that it does not require shutting down the system.

As a result, AMD may end up with a kind of hardware-upgradeable processor. For example, after a while it will be possible to add support for new instructions. However, such a solution is hardly necessary for the consumer market, so if AMD releases something similar, it will probably be some specialized CPU.
