Amid Emo Revival, Fresno Prepares for Return at Lolla 2022

Emo is experiencing yet another revival in music. New artists such as Machine Gun Kelly, Phoebe Bridgers and even the darling Olivia Rodrigo, point to a strong return of the influences that led the “most played” in the second half of the 2000s.

Here in Brazil, one of the biggest representatives of emo, Fresno has also been reaping the fruits of this recent wave.

His latest album “Vou Ter Que Me Virar”, released last year, has already accumulated millions of streams on Spotify, and the recently announced tour will mark a series of celebrations: the success of the latest releases, the return of emo and, finally, , the return of post-Covid shows.

The first step of the tour will be taken this Sunday. Fresno performs at Lollapalooza Brasil, at 2:50 pm, on the Onix stage. “We have to think very strategically about how to put on a show like this. Why are we there? For nostalgia or for the new record?”, he told CNN Fresno vocalist Lucas Silveira.

Sitting in the studio he has been setting up in his own home, he explains that the band – which has remained relevant in Brazil since the era of flat iron fringes – felt, in this moment of post-pandemic recovery, the return of people who had not watched them for years.

“The crowd stayed at home locked and said, ‘Man, when there’s a Fresno show, I’m going and I don’t even want to know,’” he said.

Fresno has had a number of launches affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus. When the pandemic was decreed, the band had released the album “Sua Alegria Foi Cancelada” a few months ago. The restrictive measures directly impacted the disclosure cycle, due to cancellations in the events sector.

Still during the pandemic, the band released the mixtape “INVentário”, and, more recently, the album “Vou Ter Que Me Virar”. Lucas explained that the isolation at home made space available so they could work on more songs that were in the drawer.

“If you see, we released about 30 songs between 2020 and 2021. We were busy with the production so that one day, at the end of the pandemic, we could play them”, he said.

Emo return and experimentation with new sounds

Emo is resuming an aesthetic already well known by the public. Lucas points out that Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker plays an important role in this process. Barker is the producer responsible for several emo revival releases such as Machine Gun Kelly, Willow and even Avril Lavigne’s comeback album.

However, Fresno is perhaps in its moment of greatest experimentation with other sounds. The remixes released by the band in February are a good example. In one of the songs released, DJ Mu540 turns the single “Vou Ter Que Me Virar” into a funk and psy trance hit.

One of Lucas’ strategies for the band not to repeat itself sonically is precisely the isolated production, which the pandemic forced them to do.

“We made a lot of records getting together to play. It is very easy for us to repeat ourselves and fall into a comfort zone. So we make productions “in off”, which is not playing together, but each one giving the idea”

Lucas Silveira

Lucas understands that this return of emo is a cyclical characteristic common to music in general. “There is a generation that ages 10 or 20 years and starts looking for things from their youth as if they were an “elixir”: ‘Oh, it was really good when we listened to those sounds, enjoying those shows, going to the square to drink’”, he said.

For the Fresno singer, this nostalgia seen in the music market was already seen, for example, in the 1980s, when pop influenced rock bands to adopt electronic drums and synthesizers.

Presentation at Lollapalooza

For the presentation at Lolla, Lucas said that a show was prepared with “Superfresno” – the band’s grandiose format, with brass accompaniment.

“This band, in my opinion, is more like a festival, more like an afternoon show. You can’t say it’s less emo, but it’s different. It magnifies the sound, it’s like the deluxe version of the songs,” he comments.

Breaking his head to form a setlist that includes the band’s recent productions and classics, the vocalist said that it is complex to formulate a setlist that includes the different audiences that participate in the festival.

“There will be our fans who arrive early, people who come just for the party, fans who come to watch just because we are. It has to be massive for all these guys,” she said.
