Festive streets, but not saturated with light. As the end of the year celebrations approach, the city of Amsterdam has taken the initiative to ensure that its historic center and, by extension, all its streets are not disfigured. In a 35-page rulebook revealed by the Guardian, the city asks its residents to register their decorating intentions online at least 72 hours in advance.
“These rules are intended to ensure that the illuminations are suitable for the streets of Amsterdam and that a good balance is maintained between the quiet streets and the illuminations of the public space”, explains the town hall. In the 17th century canal district and in the historic center, the rules will be stricter than elsewhere.
Low consumption required
The fairy lights will also have to have low consumption LEDs and will have to be switched off from midnight to 6 a.m. These measures were made necessary as advances in technology have made Christmas lights a cheap and increasingly popular commodity.
“In order to guarantee the quality of life in our public space, it is important that the festive illuminations fit into the nature of the streets of Amsterdam, in terms of quantity, colors, power and design,” concludes the municipality.
