International analyst Lourival Sant’Anna, during his participation in the CNN Prime Time expressed concern over recent actions by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that he is distancing himself from efforts to free hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
According to Sant’Anna, Netanyahu has prioritized military actions over diplomatic negotiations.
The analyst cited two recent events that corroborate this view: “First he killed the children and grandchildren of Ismail Haniyeh, who was the leader of Hamas, on the day there were negotiations in Doha, Qatar. Then Netanyahu killed Haniyeh himself.”
Military strategy and internal pressure
The expert argues that Netanyahu’s strategy is strongly anchored in the use of military force, which has generated criticism both domestically and on the international stage.
Sant’Anna highlighted that Israeli society, being democratic, has expressed strong discontent with the conduct of the campaign in Gaza, especially due to the lack of priority given to the release of the approximately 100 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas.
The opening of a new front of conflict in Lebanon, with recent attacks on Hezbollah targets in Beirut, is seen by Sant’Anna as further evidence of Netanyahu’s militaristic approach.
The analyst mentioned that the United States Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, expressed concern about the escalation of the conflict, stating that “diplomacy is the best solution” and that the US “does not want an all-out war”.
International reactions
Sant’Anna also commented on international reactions to Israel’s actions, including the silent protest at the UN General Assembly, where several delegations, including the Brazilian one, withdrew before Netanyahu’s speech.
However, the analyst questioned the “selective outrage” of some countries, comparing the situation with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where similar reactions were not observed.
Despite criticism of the disproportionality of the Israeli campaign in Gaza, Sant’Anna acknowledged that the situation in Lebanon is different, arguing that Hezbollah has attacked northern Israel, forcing the displacement of up to 80,000 people.
In this context, the analyst considers that international law allows a response like the one Israel is giving at the moment.
