The United States today officially designated the Russian private military company Wagner as an international criminal organization, freezing its assets in the US, for helping the Russian military in the Ukraine war.
Last month the White House stated that the Wagner Group had received a shipment of weapons from North Korea to help bolster Russian forces in Ukraine, in a sign of of the group’s expanding role in that conflict.
The American government it also listed certain individuals and entities which are sanctioned for their relations with the Wagner company, which it accuses not only of its participation in Russian invasion of Ukraine but also for her involvement in crimes she has committed in other countries.
“Wagner’s associates are involved in ongoing criminal activities, including mass executions, rape, child abduction and renditions in the Central African Republic and Mali” is stated in the announcement of the US Treasury Department according to the Athens News Agency.
“Today’s sanctions against the Wagner group, as well as the new sanctions against their partners and other companies that support the Russian military machine, will further prevent Putin from arming it” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.
Simultaneously with the imposition of sanctions against Wagner the US Treasury Department added the names of 19 Russians to the sanctions list, including Deputy Prime Minister Denis Madurov, Tatarstan Governor Rustam Minikhanov and his wife Gulsina Minikhanova, Director of the Federal Prison Service (FSIN) Arkady Gostev, Director of the FSIN in Rostov Dmitry Bezruki, Head of the Presidential Administration of the State Councilor Alexander Kharichev and the founder of the telecommunications company Skarlet with the trade name Yota Sergey Antoniev.
Sanctions were imposed on the head of the “Kalashnikov” group, Alan Luzhnikov.
Russian shipbuilding and war industry companies have also been included in the list – this is the Almaz-Antei group and its general manager Yan Novikov, the air transport company Aviakon Chitotrans and some aircraft belonging to it as well as some companies related to Rostec.
Also included in the list both yachts named Addiction and natta, related to businessman Antoniev.
