The Special Court against Organized Crime and Corruption decided to extend the detention of Freddy Beleris and Pantelei Kokavesi Albania. The lawyer of the newly elected Mayor of Heimarra is preparing to file an appeal, while the reaction of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is strong.
“The extension of the detention of Freddy Beleris, now the elected mayor of Chimarra, offends the public’s sense of justice and the European perception of the rule of law,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes in a statement.
Freddy Belleri was arrested a few days before the local elections in Albania for buying votes. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU, met with his Albanian counterpart, Ota Xhaka. During the discussion, the issue of the Mayor of Heimarra was also raised.
