Anna “Delvey” Sorokin 33, isn’t shying away from his controversial past as he prepares for compete in the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” .
Convicted in 2019 of aggravated theft and other financial crimes after posing as a German heiress with a trust fund (a legal arrangement to transfer assets to heirs), she was detained by immigration authorities for overstaying her visa and served two years and 18 months in prison.
Sorokin has recently been living under house arrest in New York with an electronic ankle bracelet while he appeals his deportation order.
She said to People who requested and received permission from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to travel to Los Angeles, where the program is produced.
Netflix dramatized her story in the popular 2022 series “Inventing Anna“.
Far from shying away from all that, both Sorokin and ABC appear to be embracing what made her famous in the first place.
In a press release from the network announcing the cast for season 33, Sorokin was listed as “famous ankle bracelet-wearing fashionista Anna Delvey.” She will be partnered with professional dancer Ezra Sosa for the season.
“Some see her as a cunning con artist, while others see her as a charismatic and ambitious entrepreneur who took advantage of New York’s social elite in an attempt to open a prestigious art studio,” her biography states in the press release.
“Her case has also sparked discussions about wealth, privilege and social mobility in modern society. Her story continues to capture the public imagination.”
Sorokin’s photo for the dance competition shows her wearing the court-imposed electronic ankle bracelet.
