Skopje showed their irritation when Emanuel Macron referred to her side Northern Macedonia as “Northern Macedonians”, on the occasion of the Bulgarian veto for the country’s accession to the European Union.
“With the North Macedonians, we will look in the next few hours to find ways to complete the agreement and move to the level of ambassadors next week, in order to unblock the process,” the French president said.
There were immediate reactions in Skopje, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Northern Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, hastening to state that it was an unintentional mistake.
“We contacted the French embassy about how much the guys should be respected, but since yesterday there has been communication with the French delegation. Our Prime Minister contacted Macron in Brussels. I have no doubt that this is an unintentional mistake. “Macron has no dilemmas about the name and identity and the issues that have been defined here and at the United Nations,” said the Foreign Minister of Northern Macedonia.
