Charlotte England defender Anton Woakes has died at the age of 25, Major League Soccer announced today (19/1).
Woakes was killed in a boat collision in Miami as the club was in Florida to begin training, according to local media.
He started his career with Tottenham in July 2013. Played one match for the first team, coming on as an 80th minute substitute in a 5-0 League Cup win against Gillingham in 2016.
He later had successful spells at Portsmouth and Atlanta United, before moving to Charlotte in 2022. “Anton made people around him better in all areas of life and represented Charlotte to the highest standards both on and off the pitch,” said club owner David Tepper.
“He will be greatly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Anton’s family during this heartbreaking time.”
