William Anders, the Apollo 8 astronaut who took the iconic “Earthrise” photo from space in 1968, was killed when the plane he was piloting crashed into the sea off the San Juan Islands in Washington state. He was 90 years old. His son, Greg Anders, confirmed the death, according to CNN. “My dad died in a plane crash in the San Juan Islands,” Anders told CNN Friday night. “The family is devastated and mourns the loss of a great pilot,” he added.
