The iPhone app has been created to give tribute to the little DNA sequencing designed by Oxford Nanopore. Two men named Gigascience, and Palatnick, among with his collaborators published that iGenome is able to analyze the series of genomes of viruses, as well as microbes fast and accurately.
How Does The App Work?
The app connects a new genome to a reference genome. This process is commonly known as read alignment. This process indicates the closeness of the genomes and also tells what an organism is. In addition, the app carries out a process known as “variant calling” -it identifies the points at which the new genome is differing from the reference
It has been brought to notice that this app does not require a laptop and can do all of its processing on the phone, but this applies restrictions on the size of the genome to be analyzed. However, once the analyzing process is started, genomes of germs are able to expose insights like mutations which treats infections. Insights have the power to understand pathogens, combat pandemics, and heal infections and diseases.
Steps to use iGenome
- Click on the option of read and reference genome to analyze in fast format.
- Select one of the default files using Dropbox or load it from either Google Drive, Airdrop, or Files.
- It finally shows ‘read file’ or the ‘reference file,’ and another file that shows results of mutations.
- Choose the files to be aligned, and select the analyze button to line up read to the reference genome, after setting them to a certain distance.
- The alignment completes and then the analysis pane is displayed to show genome alignment.
- Further details of the sequence are available when screen touched for a long time.
- User is also able to zoom in and zoom out incase they want to check the alignments.
According to reports, a few datasets were carried out to check iGenome’s accuracy on an iPhone 8. The app was also tested on various samples of clinical and environmental viruses to observe it’s efficiency and accuracy, and see how the analysis software was handled by researchers. According to research, the main objective of this was to show how icounterparts worked with desktop aligners. Back then the tests only focused on Ebola and Zika. It has been further added that the Ebola tests main focus was on comparing mutations of iGenomics to SAM tools, whereas the Zika test focused on comparing the consensus genome to nucmer.
The first time scientists understood the way of reading DNA was in 1997.
