Apple GPU M1 Max is on par with Nvidia RTX 2080 and PlayStation 5 GPU

With the introduction of the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs, Apple has made some high-profile performance claims with regard to graphics capabilities. Notebookcheck has conducted a quick analysis that shows that these claims are likely to be justified.

According to Apple, the Apple M1 Max is capable of delivering approximately 70% faster processor performance over the Apple M1. GPU performance has been increased by about 4x compared to the Apple M1. We have already reported the results of testing the platform in Geekbench.

Apple emphasized in its keynote that its new SoCs retained the M1 designations as they are enlarged versions of the Apple M1. Notebookcheck has released an estimate of the GPU performance of the new platforms, assuming that Apple did not increase the clock speed of the new GPU cores in the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs or make any other changes. Based on this, Notebookcheck made the following teraflops performance (TFLOPS) estimates:

  1. M1 8 cores – 2.6 TFLOPS;
  2. M1 Pro 14 cores – 4.5 TFLOPS;
  3. M1 Pro 16 cores – 5.2 TFLOPS;
  4. M1 Max 24 ядра — 7,8 TFLOPS;
  5. M1 Max 32 ядра — 10,4 TFLOPS.

The performance of all Apple platforms is very impressive, especially considering how much less power they consume compared to solutions from Intel, Nvidia and AMD. Even at maximum performance, the M1 Max SoC consumes 100W less than a high-end laptop with a discrete GPU, as Apple noted during the presentation. However, the 32-core GPU in the M1 Max delivers identical performance to the Nvidia RTX 2080 desktop GPU (10.07 TFLOPS) and the PlayStation 5 GPU (10.28 TFLOPS). For a laptop, this is a truly amazing result.
