Ten years without Sic, “Marco has remained in people’s hearts”

«Marco has remained in people’s hearts, it’s like meeting him every day among the people». Ten years have passed since the death of Marco Simoncelli. It was October 23, 2011, on the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. His father, Paolo, now team manager of Sic58 Squadra Corse, used these words a few days ago. “It’s a strange thing and I often ask myself even after 10 years: what did Marco do? He was a smiling and happy boy who was chasing his dream, a sincere person who struck immediately, perhaps also for his curls ».

“As a parent, I have no regrets for Marco,” he said. The absence, however, is felt. Everyone in the paddock misses Sic. Over all Valentino Rossi: «I miss Marco very much, especially as a friend, because we had a lot of fun together. It was always fun with him. We created the Academy in his honor, because he was the first rider we helped ».

Ten years after his death, he is dedicated to Sic’s broken dream, as everyone called it, the third installment of Ossi di Cuttlefish, what we remember, airing from October 19 on RaiPlay. Below is an exclusive video.

Marco Simoncelli crashed on the track, he remained clinging to the bike, he was hit by the other riders on the way who could not do anything to avoid him. An hour after the accident, he dies. “I never thought I’d have to tell the death of my friend Sic” says Paolo Beltramo, historian sent to the pits of the world championship. «I believe that a rider who has only won a title in 250 has never left such a deep hole, an almost unbridgeable void. I don’t know how to say, it is such an important absence that it becomes a presence ».

What we remember leaves a huge void that goes beyond the boundaries of motorcycling. And that death live, under the eye of the cameras, tragically gives Marco the glory and love of the people he had dreamed of. «After a few hours Paolo arrived and told me to go with him to greet Marco. I arrived and there he was who was there and seemed to be taking us around. It made me want to say: “Stop messing around, come up and let’s go home, let’s go for a run, let’s go and have a beer. “He was there, with his eyes half closed just looking away. Then I touched his hair but when I heard it was frozen it was a shock”.

On the circuit that bears his name he will be remembered at the weekend. In Misano Adriatico from 22 to 24 October, when the World Championship will return to Romagna for the Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna GP. On Saturday, after Qualifying, at the Quercia corner, an oak tree will be planted in memory of him, as in Sepang there is a palm tree near the corner of the crash. To never forget the Sic.
