Apple MacBook on the new Apple M1 SoC took less than 1% of the laptop market

Apple confirmed last year that it would be moving from Intel to its own ARM-based SoCs. Last November, the first MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini were unveiled, all featuring the Apple M1 SoC.

MacBooks equipped with the Apple M1 SoC accounted for about 0.8% of all notebook manufacturers’ total notebook shipments in 2020, according to a report from research firm TrendForce.

Analysts predict that in 2021, the market share of devices based on the Apple M1 will be about 7%. This is because the Cupertino-based giant is expected to launch new devices, including the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

It also reported that total laptop shipments in 2020 exceeded 200 million units, an increase of 22.5%. This is the highest growth rate ever recorded. Analysts attribute this to an increase in demand for laptops due to the transition to remote work and training.

Apple is expected to release a new SoC for Mac devices this year that will outperform the Apple M1. Presumably, the platform will be called M1X or M2.
