Applications for asylum in Germany increased in May

It more than doubled in May, compared to the corresponding month of 2020, the number of people who first applied for asylum in Germany.

According to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) released on Monday, cited by AMPE, the authorities received 8,278 applications from persons seeking international protection as well as 950 additional applications last month.

A year earlier, the number of first applications was 3,777, but at that time even stricter restrictions on cross-border travel were imposed due to the new pandemic. coronavirus.

According to the BAMF, most of the asylum seekers are citizens of Syria (3,776), Afghanistan (1,594) and Iraq (651).

In 2020, a total of 102,581 foreigners sought asylum in Germany, according to the agency. Between them, the 26,520 applications concern children under one year of age born in the country.

Conservative politician Matthias Middelberg has expressed strong concern about the growing number of asylum seekers as more migrants try to reach Italy and Spain from North Africa.

“In many cases they are financial Immigrants“And not for people who leave their homes” to escape some danger, “he said. As a result, the majority of these people have no chance of being granted asylum under German law.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 15% of people who arrived in Italy by boat in the first four months of the year are Tunisian nationals, 13% Ivory Coast nationals and 10% Bangladeshi nationals.

Among the people who arrived in Spain in 2020 were many Algerian and Moroccan nationals, according to UN figures. In a few of them it is considered that international protection is likely to be offered.

Mr Middelberg has argued that solutions need to be found that do not only concern the redistribution of refugees in the Member States of the European Union – which is not implemented by many of them. According to the conservative German politician, Italy and Spain need to be financially and staffed to set up reception centers and speed up asylum or repatriation procedures.
