Armed Forces Begin Third Phase of Brazil’s Largest Military Operation in 2021

As of Tuesday (9), the Armed Forces began the third “Ibagé” phase of Operation Meridiano, the largest military training operation in Brazil in 2021. With the coordination of the Ministry of Defense, approximately 5 thousand soldiers are participating, 1 thousand Navy, Army and Brazilian Air Force (FAB) vehicles, planes and helicopters in the cities of Rosário do Sul and Bagé, in Rio Grande do Sul.

In the São Borja Instruction Field, in Rosário do Sul, air attack activities were carried out with fighter jets, water course transposition and anti-aircraft defense, artillery, rockets from the Astros 2020 Program, parachuting jumps and use of the Command and Forces troops Specials.

Until November 14, under the guidance of the Southern Military Command (CMS), the Army’s headquarters located in Porto Alegre, the commanders’ ability to maintain a good level of awareness of the combat situation will be verified, with area exercises personnel functions, maneuver, intelligence, logistics, mobility and counter-mobility, social communication, civil affairs and fires.

Two Army divisions will be opponents in a joint and single critical action activity, such as airborne assault, air mobile, special operations and information in the same tactical context. The deployment of the means of command and control will be carried out in a movement maneuver with 200 km in front and 150 km in depth.

The first phase of the operation, called Meridiano-Poti, took place in Pará, under the responsibility of the FAB, using aircraft. The second phase, known as Dragão, was carried out by the Navy, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.
