A shootout this Sunday morning (9), in the center of Manaus, capital of Amazonas, ended with the death of a military police officer and a Brazilian Army sergeant. Another PM was injured in the incident and taken to an emergency room.
At a press conference, Delegate Daniel Vezani, responsible for the investigation, reported that, initially, the exchange of gunfire took place after a fight between the Army sergeant and his wife, who called the Military Police for domestic violence.
When the vehicles arrived, Sergeant Diego Azevedo reacted and killed police officer José Antônio with a shot to the head. Diego also hit the leg of another PM, Weldmann Teixeira dos Santos.
After the confrontation with the police, ROCAM (the Amazonas police elite force) was called in to provide support. After another exchange of gunfire, the sergeant was killed in the couple’s apartment.
According to information from the delegate, the couple had two daughters, who are now with their mother. She would be injured, as she was attacked by the sergeant, and was sent for examinations.
The weapon used by the sergeant was collected by the Army Police, who were at the scene. The case will be investigated by the Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Police Station (DEHS).
In a post on social media, the Amazonas Military Police lamented the death of police officer José Antonio.
