At least 15 dead in Israeli raids in Damascus

At least 15 people were killed and 16 others wounded today in Israeli airstrikes that hit apartment buildings in the suburbs of Damascus, state news agency SANA reported, citing a Syrian military source. The Syrian Ministry of Defense gave the same account. One bombed building was located in the Maze district and the other in Kunchaya, west of the capital. Israel’s military radio said targets of the attack in Damascus were central facilities and other assets of what it described as the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. Israel has been launching airstrikes against Iranian-linked targets in Syria for years, but has stepped up its attacks since October 7, 2023. Commanders of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, based in Syria, are known to reside in the district, Maze according to residents who fled after the recent strikes that killed Hezbollah and Guards operatives.
