At least 16 dead in Peru – Bus fell off a cliff

A bus carrying about 40 people fell into a cliff yesterday Tuesday, 5/14 in the morning in the Ayacucho mountain region, in the Andes, in southeastern Peru, resulting in the loss of at least sixteen people's lives, the authorities announced. The double-decker bus, which was traveling from the capital Lima to Ayacucho, deviated from its course and fell down a cliff about a hundred meters high with the roof. The rescue operation was delayed due to hailstorm, informed the press representative of the office of the People's Advocate in Ayiacoutso. Fatal traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, due in particular to the development of excessive speed, the poor condition of the road surface, the lack of signaling, as well as the lack of police controls. According to figures from the Peruvian Ministry of Transport, in 2023 3,138 people died in traffic accidents in the Latin American state. 70% of these deaths were attributed to factors such as driver fatigue, or driver error.
