Athens’ three moves against Ankara’s ‘hybrid war’

By Dimitris Gatsiou

Turkey is once again on its path of detente and détente, sharply increasing its challenges at all levels, grasping the thread of instrumentalization of the migration issue and Athens, which has been put on alert, is putting catalytic barriers to any leadership’s aspirations of Ankara.

Through a triptych of moves, as it came to the fore during the meeting of the Governmental National Security Council, under the prime minister, a resounding signal of determination to shield the borders is emitted, at the moment when Mr. Mitsotakis sent a new, but clear message to neighbor that Greece is facing a form of authoritarianism. “Revisionism and lack of respect for the basic principles of International Law must be stopped from the start. If this is not done, the aggressors are encouraged to advance their agenda,” he noted, addressing the Online Summit of Heads of State and Government for the International Platform of Crimea.

Against the “hybrid war” that the neighbor to the east has started, once again instrumentalizing immigration, there are three moves by Athens that are added to the strategy agenda. First, the gradual expansion of the fence along the entire length of the Evros, with the relevant ministries and the General Staff of National Defense identifying the disputed points, which will be given priority. Secondly, the upgrading and strengthening of the means of surveillance. Thirdly, the increased vigilance of the Armed Forces and Security Forces both on land and sea borders. Athens, at the same time, points out that the leadership of Ankara does not respect the European Union-Turkey agreement, endangering human lives and creating a problem in Europe and its neighboring countries, stressing that the country is adamant regarding its sovereign rights rights, which are guaranteed by international conventions and by International Law.

“The Greek authorities save human lives both in the Evros and the Aegean, they follow an immigration policy, strict but fair, defending the borders of the country, which are also the borders of Europe. In this direction we will continue with humanity, with respect for the rights of the unfortunate people, but without being politically naive and without under any circumstances allowing the Homeland, but also the Greek society, to relive what we experienced regarding immigration and refugees during the period of the previous administration”, he said, from the briefing room , the government representative, Yiannis Economou.

“Greece is determined to continue guarding its borders, which are also the borders of Europe, with absolute respect for International and European Law, saving thousands of lives on land and sea. It has proven this many times in the shipwrecks of rotten ships used by traffickers, the it also proves in Evros. A violator of both International Law and its joint statement with the European Union, is Turkey, whose authorities promote, with the use of violence, immigrants to Greece. This is exactly what the testimonies of immigrants who entered confirm recently from Evros”, government officials note.
