Wiretapping: The opposition rejects the new EYP Governor in the Institutions Committee

By Niki Zorba

The major opposition and the minor opposition has been referring to the political isolation of the government as early as Monday, when the dance was “opened” at a parliamentary level of the espionage case, with the Conference of Presidents.

Today, the Institutions and Transparency Committee is meeting for the appointment of Mr. Demiris as the new Governor of the EYP, with the opposition voting against the government’s choice.

Moreover, the fact that despite the request of PASOK (mainly) and SYRIZA, for the Institutions and Transparency Committee to meet this week in order to summon to a hearing those involved in the issue of surveillance, in the end today’s meeting will only concern procedural matters, has caused anger – first of all – of Harilaou Trikoupis who talks about a cover-up operation by the prime minister himself.

Koumoundourou also claims this with increased decibels. At Monday’s Executive Secretariat, which met under the chairmanship of SYRIZA, the statement issued was extremely aggressive: he called the party’s “directorate”, K. Mitsotakis, “the mastermind of the parastatal staff”.

Regarding today’s developments at the Conference of Presidents, with the exception of the Velopoulos party, the rest of the opposition will not vote for Mr. Demiris’ position.

SYRIZA has already declared that it will not vote for him because “it is a choice of an attempted cover-up” and Harilaou Trikoupi, because it is not the product of an inter-party agreement.

It is recalled that with the Government Gazette issued by the government shortly after the prime minister’s public position on the issue of surveillance, the role of the House in the choice of each government for the EYP commander is advisable rather than binding.

Monitoring of other policies

Meanwhile yesterday, another opposition and opposition opposition broke out, on the occasion of the response given by government spokesman Yiannis Economou to a question about surveillance of other politicians.

The government spokesperson stated that “the government and the Prime Minister are not aware of a similar issue to that of Mr. Androulakis” and SYRIZA read his answer as an indirect admission that there are other similar cases like that of the president of PASOK, adding new question to the government:

“From Mr Economou’s response arises a question: Let us assume that Mr Mitsotakis is actually dangerous and he does not know, he did not really curiosity when he was missing Messrs. other politicians?”.

For his part, Mr. Economou spoke of a distortion of what he said and a lack of basic understanding:

“In SYRIZA, they either lack even the basic ability to understand a clear statement or, as a regular tactic, they distort them”.

Alexis Tsipras, however, is said to be certain that there are other cases similar to Nikos Androulakis, with SYRIZA frequently referring to his announcements in a Kathimerini publication that spoke of surveillance of 7-8 other political figures.
