At least 25 people were killed in an airstrike on a school compound housing displaced people near the town of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza.
The ministry said in a statement that Israel targeted “the gate of a school housing displaced people in the town of Abasan, east of the city of Khan Younis,” calling it “a heinous massacre against displaced citizens.”
Another 53 people were injured, and the death toll is expected to rise as victims are still being transferred to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, the ministry said.
This comes days after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued instructions to hundreds of thousands of people in Khan Younis, Shujaya and several neighborhoods of Gaza City to leave the area.
This brings the total number of displaced people in Gaza to around 1.9 million now, from 1.7 million in May, according to the UN.
It is estimated that approximately nine out of every 10 people in Gaza are internally displaced, many of them multiple times.
The IDF said the evacuation orders are necessary so that civilians are not caught up in its operations in areas where Hamas is trying to reestablish a presence.
The military also noted that they make great efforts to avoid civilian casualties.
Hamas, for its part, commented that the evacuations threaten to return negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage agreement to “square one.”
