Attack on Iraq: Baghdad recalls its ambassador from Ankara – Turkey denies involvement

A diplomatic incident, so far, has been caused by the attack that took place yesterday in Iraqi Kurdistan, on the border with Iraq, in which eight Iraqis were killed and more than 20 were injured. Iraq blames Turkey for the death of the 8 people, while from for its part, Turkey blames the Kurds and the PKK and calls on Baghdad to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Ambassador recall

Iraq will recall its charge d’affaires in Ankara for consultations and summon the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad for an explanation, following the bombing that killed eight civilians in Iraqi Kurdistan, the Iraqi government announced last night. This decision was taken during a meeting of the National Security Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi.

The Foreign Ministry was instructed to “summon Turkey’s ambassador to Iraq to convey to him” that Baghdad condemns the deadly bombing. Also, the Iraqi chargé d’affaires in Ankara is recalled and the process to appoint a new ambassador to Turkey is interrupted.

The council, which includes the interior, defense and finance ministers, also demanded a formal apology from Turkey and “the withdrawal of its armed forces from all Iraqi territory.”

According to the state news agency INA, Baghdad also plans to protest to the United Nations Security Council.

Iraqi parliamentarians demand a debate on Kurdistan

On Wednesday, 91 Iraqi diplomats signed a petition to host Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi and discuss recent developments regarding the Turkish offensive in the Duhok region.

The representatives invited the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense to attend a meeting of the Parliament to discuss the measures taken to end the “bloodshed” in the Kurdistan region. They added that the measures should end the ongoing violations of Iraqi sovereignty and Turkish aggression that violates the United Nations Charter and the provisions of Article 8 of the Iraqi Constitution.

The Kurds are to blame

The deadly attack that killed at least eight civilians in northern Iraq was carried out by PKK terrorists, security sources cited by Sabah and Anadolu Agency said on Wednesday.

The unnamed Turkish media “sources” said pro-PKK media started spreading fake news claiming the attack near the village of Parakh in Duhok province was carried out by the Turkish military. They noted that the terrorist group, which is on the verge of collapse due to Turkey’s successful anti-terrorist operations, is resorting to using lies, spreading disinformation and other unethical methods to get out.

Turkey’s foreign ministry issued a statement on Wednesday saying the Turkish military refrains from targeting civilians, political infrastructure, historical and cultural buildings and others during its counter-terrorism operations. He also urged the Iraqi authorities not to be provoked by PKK terrorists and to start an investigation to find the real perpetrators.

We’re watching, the US says

Washington is monitoring the situation, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, declining to comment in detail as news of the strike emerged.

At a regular press briefing, Price reiterated the US position that military action in Iraq should respect Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressed “the importance of ensuring the protection of civilians”.
