Ukraine said on Saturday (23) that its daring attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Crimean city of Sevastopol left dozens dead and injured, “including senior leaders”.
Friday’s attack is perhaps the most dramatic example of the confidence with which Ukraine pursues Russian installations in occupied Crimea — and shows the vulnerability of critically important infrastructure on the peninsula.
In a statement on Telegram, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said a special operation dubbed the “Crab Trap” was timed to strike while senior members of the Russian Navy were gathering.
According to Ukraine, the attack left dozens dead and injured, “including the senior leadership of the fleet”. No name was given and the CNN has not independently verified the claim.
Sevastopol is the largest city in Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. Ukraine has not given up hope of getting it back.
“The bold and meticulous work of the Special Operations Forces allowed them to strike the Black Sea Fleet headquarters ‘on time and with precision’ while the heads of the Russian Navy were meeting in the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol,” it said in the statement .
“The data was transmitted to the Air Force for attack. Details of the attack will be revealed as soon as possible. The result is dozens of dead and injured occupants, including the fleet’s senior leadership,” the statement read.
He added: “We are moving forward!”
