The U.S. government promised Monday that it would “hold accountable” Yemeni pro-Iranian Houthi rebels, who have claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on Abu Dhabi International Airport and a nearby industrial facility.
“The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which killed three innocent civilians,” said White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
“The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attack and we will work with the United Arab Emirates and our international partners to hold them accountable,” he said.
“Our commitment to the security of the UAE is unshakable and we will stand by our partners in the UAE in the face of all threats against their territory,” he added.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the security of the UAE and stand by our partners in the UAE,” said a State Department statement signed by its spokesman, Ned Price.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, later on Monday, according to a second press release issued by his spokesman.
“(Foreign Minister) Blinken condemned the terrorist attacks (…) which killed and injured innocent civilians”, “expressed his solidarity with the people of the Emirates” and also “expressed his condolences”.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed at least three people.
The UAE, a member state of the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in the 2015 war in Yemen on the side of government forces and against the Houthis, has threatened to “retaliate” that the attack would not go “unpunished”.
The war in Yemen, which has claimed the lives of at least 377,000 people, mostly civilians, has escalated in recent weeks. The alliance has increased its air raids and government forces their ground operations.
