Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Vienna – including many far right – to protest the Austrian government’s new crackdown, which includes a universal lockdown and mandatory coronavirus vaccination from the new year.
According to Reuters, the crowd shouted slogans such as “no to vaccination”, “so far” and “no to the fascist dictatorship”.
According to Austrian police, at least 35,000 people took part in the rally. Less than 10 protesters were arrested for violating anti-pandemic measures and carrying Nazi symbols.
66% of the population in the country is fully vaccinated against coronavirus, while many Austrians say they are skeptical about vaccines – a stance instigated by the far-right Freedom Party.
