The death toll from the severe storm that hit Austria today has risen to five, as reported by the APA agency citing the local authorities.
Three people were killed by a falling tree in Lower Austria, while two children died in Carinthia, near a small lake, where strong winds uprooted trees and injured ten others.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Neuhammer confirmed the deaths of the two children on Twitter, adding that many people were seriously injured.
In June, an 82-year-old man was killed when a landslide was triggered by heavy rain in Carinthia.
Austria is currently suffering from a heat wave and authorities have warned that storms may occur. According to experts, climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as heat waves.
