Authorities are halting recovery efforts for the four additional people believed dead after a bridge collapse in Baltimore, United States, said Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of the Maryland State Police, Wednesday night. Monday (28).
“At this time, based on conditions, we are moving from a recovery mode to a rescue operation,” he said.
“Due to the superstructure surrounding what we believe to be the vehicles and the amount of concrete and debris, divers are no longer able to safely navigate and operate around them,” he said. “We have exhausted all search efforts.”
The superintendent added that based on sonar scans, authorities believe the vehicles are “encased in the superstructure and concrete” of the bridge.
Butler Jr. added that there is “no definitive timeline” for how long the salvage phase will take, once completed, divers will return to the site.
“The sonar just said they can’t get to that area because it was completely encased in the superstructure,” he said. “Once the rescue effort takes place and the superstructure is removed, those same divers will go back there and bring those people close,” he added.
