Babymoon is highlighted in the pandemic: see destination tips and how to plan

A trip as a couple, alone, without anyone else, to enjoy a special moment for two. If you had heard this description a few years ago, you would have been sure that it would be a honeymoon or, in English, “honeymoon”, the occasion when couples travel after the celebration of their weddings.

The name comes from the 16th century, on account of a Norse tradition that told newlyweds to have a drink called mead during the first full moon – or the closest to the wedding.

According to legend, whoever followed this guidance would be blessed by the gods with fertility to generate their future children.

Years have passed and the term has spread around the world, but more than that: recently, it has gained a new variation.

THE babymoon honeymoon baby mix has almost the same concept: it’s a trip for two. I mean, almost to three. A moment for the couple to enjoy and relax during pregnancy, before the arrival of the child, which will demand almost exclusive attention and time from the parents in the coming months.

Kangaroo Tours, a travel operator that has been in the market for more than 40 years, noticed the beginning of the niche in Brazil in 2019, with significant growth during the pandemic.

“We identified that many pregnant couples were looking for us in 2019. It is a trend that comes from abroad, very seen in the United States and Australia”, says Dinah Carvalho, marketing manager at the company.

“It grew every year, even with the pandemic. In 2021, for example, many used trips to reveal the sex of the baby, in the impossibility of joining the family. Knowing the purpose, we already prepared a team of photographers to record the moment. Couples want to take advantage of the moment to relax, to rest, as they know that an intense period is ahead”, she emphasizes.

Maldives, Mexico, United States and cities in northeastern Brazil top the couples’ wish list, but there’s a little bit of everything.

“The choice of destination is something very personal for each couple. There are many options. There was one who chose Egypt, for example. But most are looking for beaches, places that offer all the structure for a peaceful stay. Hotels are increasingly realizing this demand and adapting packages for it, but there is still much to explore”, he adds.

Second Ana Carolina Ghellardi, director of Kankaroo in Curitiba the increase in the search for this type of trip during the last two years reached 90% in the region.

“Couples come to us asking for suggestions, but they want something they probably won’t be doing anytime soon. The traveler’s culture has changed, before the most common thing was to go to the United States to make a trousseau. Today, pregnant women no longer want that. They want to know destinations and make a different trip”, she emphasizes.

One of the hotels that started to look closely at this market was the Six Senses Botanique, which arrived in Brazil at the end of 2020, and is located in Campos do Jordão, in Serra da Cantareira.

Recently, the place launched an unprecedented program, with special treatments and therapies for pregnant women, such as yoga and meditation and types of massages specific to pregnant women.

To enjoy this package, it is necessary to book at least two nights, which will include two meals, one of which is breakfast. The companion is not left out of the tour and is also entitled to choose a massage.

The medical point of view

Whether near or far, travel plans first of all need to be aligned with the obstetrician. With the doctor’s approval ahead of her prenatal care, the pregnant woman must pay attention to some details.

The first one is about the best time to make this trip, as explained Nilton Hideto Takiuti gynecologist and obstetrician at Hospital das Clínicas.

“In healthy pregnant women, without previous chronic diseases and who do not have any disease related to pregnancy and fetal development, the end of the second trimester is usually a phase with less chance of having complications. Therefore, it is the best period to take a longer trip and further away from the place of residence,” she explains.

At the beginning of pregnancy, according to him, there is a habitual risk of miscarriage that can interfere with the schedule of walks, walks and many other activities.

“At the end of pregnancy, there is a risk of triggering labor and it occurring in an unscheduled place. Thus, trips close to the place of residence would be more suitable for these phases”, he adds.

The obstetrician also lists other important points that must be observed when programming a babymoon.: It is extremely necessary to understand if the chosen destination has medical and hospital resources for adequate obstetric care, and if the pregnant woman’s insurance has coverage in case hospitalization or premature birth is necessary.

The risk of acquiring some infectious disease such as Zika virus, malaria, Covid-19 must also be taken into account.

The most prevalent infections at the destination should be studied to assess the need for prevention, prophylaxis and eventually, if acquired, the risk of treating an infection.

If there is a risk of acquiring the Zika virus or malaria, then you will need to cover much of your body with clothing and use insect repellents on your skin and clothing.

Care must be taken with food and liquids in destinations in countries with poor sanitary and hygienic conditions to prevent travellers’ diarrhea.

Some countries require proof of vaccination against infectious diseases, but these may be contraindicated during pregnancy, especially live attenuated virus vaccines.

Regarding distances and modes of transport, Nilton advises avoiding traveling to destinations above 8,000 feet (2438 meters) in altitude. He explains that high altitudes have a lower partial pressure of oxygen and may be related to inadequate fetal growth and development.

“Observational studies report an increased risk of preterm birth among pregnant passengers, especially on long trips. Therefore, airlines have some restrictions on the boarding of pregnant women of more advanced gestational age. It is necessary to contact the companies directly to understand these observations before purchasing a ticket”, he points out.

Another point of attention is the restriction of movements in air travel, which can favor deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism.

“This risk occurs in all passengers, but during pregnancy and postpartum there is a danger”, emphasizes Hideto.

Thus, he gives some important guidelines such as: keep yourself well hydrated; move the legs and feet regularly so that stasis of blood from the veins does not occur; wear comfortable and loose clothing so as not to limit venous return; wear half elastic before boarding the aircraft.

time to enjoy

After all the previous care has been taken, the date and the best destination have been chosen, it’s time to relax to wait for the baby’s arrival.

According to neuropsychologist Roberta Brito the approach and connection of the couple throughout the pregnancy is fundamental, including the programming and babymoon .

“There are several phases that the couple will go through. The first trimester is a lot of anxiety, insecurity. In the second, it is an idea that is already more mature and both the mother and the father tend to be more psychologically calm”, she says.

“The trip is to seal this moment of relaxation. It is scientifically proven that moments like these help the brain to perceive the new reality and help with adaptation,” he explains.

For the psychologist, it is important for the couple to understand the next steps ahead.

United, they will be able to go through the phase in a more peaceful way and will also pass on the good feelings to the baby.

“There will be a reorganization of the family. A new member will arrive and that’s not a simple thing. Anything that helps along this path is important. From room preparation to a photo shoot. The reception and affection given to the couple and their connection will reflect directly on the baby”, she emphasizes.

And it was in search of this connection and preparation that Thais Naidelice and the husband Felipe Pavan decided to make the long-awaited babymoon. Now parents of Guilherme and Rafael, the couple not only loved the first experience but also repeated the dose with their second child.

Thais became pregnant with her firstborn in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. It had been a while since she had traveled alone with Felipe and, pregnant, she had no idea when she would be able to make this schedule so soon.

Your doctor recommended choosing an easily accessible destination and being careful with certain types of food.

“I had already heard about the babymoon on the internet and we decided to make our own. We went to Praia do Forte, in Bahia. We stayed at IberoStar. I was six months old and we needed this moment of our own. We knew that when he was born things would not be so easy, we would have a lot of news and we wanted to prepare ourselves for that”, says Thais.

“The three of us connected, joined forces and it was wonderful. When I got pregnant with Rafa, I didn’t think twice and did another one”, continues the lawyer, who also took advantage of the trip to celebrate her wedding anniversary.

With the second child, the choice was also Bahia, but Itacaré. The hotel was the txai and despite the same concept of travel, she explains that it was important in another way.

“We decided to repeat the dose, but at another time. When I got pregnant with Rafa, Gui was seven months old. I traveled with five and he was with 10. We were at a very fast pace, with very tiring nights. I remember that the day we arrived, we went to dinner and slept for 11 hours straight,” he says, laughing.

To prepare for a new experience, to connect or just to relax, the babymoon It’s a trend that’s here to stay and bring benefits to this very special moment for the couple.

If chosen with care and responsibility, it is yet another form of travel to be immortalized in memory.
