The leader of Turkey’s far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Gray Wolves leader Devlet Bahceli has made an unprecedented, mafia-like, direct threat against Ankara Mayor Mansour Giavados after he ousted him.
Speaking to reporters after the November 30 parliamentary group meeting, Bahceli said: “Mr. Mansour must be careful. The Gray Wolves’ breath is now on his back,” Bahceli said, noting that he would monitor the case daily. .
His comments come after MHP supporters attacked a memorial service for the MHP founder in the capital, Ankara, at the weekend. A group of about 50 Gray Wolves raided an event in memory of Alparslan Türkeş by the Alparslan Türkeş Foundation in the Yenimahalle district on 28 November. Several people were injured in the attack.
It is common for MHP paramilitaries to attack critics of their own party as they enjoy impunity. The Gray Wolves – a group of far-right Turkish nationalists – have been outlawed in many European countries for their ongoing attacks on critics of Erdogan, Armenians and Kurds.
The head of the MHP province in Ankara, Turgay Bastug, was accused of instigating the attack on the event with a social media post he announced the day before the event. In a series of tweets, Bastug criticized the speakers at the event for “betraying” the Turks. He also accused one of the speakers of continuing his political career in Meral Aksener’s right-wing Good Party (İYİ).
“The members of the Gray Wolves will never accept those who betrayed the Turks and our leader Devlet Bahceli to be able to honor the memory of Alparslan Turkes,” Bastug said.
According to Bahceli, Yavas, who comes from the Republican People’s Party of the main opposition (CHP), was responsible for the quarrel.
The CHP was quick to respond to Bahceli’s allegations and threats, saying Yavas had the support of Ankara residents. , referring to the opposition alliance consisting of the CHP and the right-wing Good Party (İYİ).
“These threats have never benefited anyone and they never will,” Torun said, vowing to side with Yavas over Bahceli’s statements.
