Bar in Spain charges for waiters’… itineraries: Tourists freak out – “Never go”

The… good things of Mykonos travel even to Spain. A bar caused a storm of reactions on social media, from tourists who visited because it charges them 20 cents every time a waiter visits their table and an extra euro for cutlery.

Spain’s Blas Galey Hermoso was shocked to see the bill after enjoying a few drinks while on holiday in bar The Imperial Bar in Zamora, in northwestern Spain.

While it is established practice in Europe to have an extra charge to enjoy a drink on the terrace, what angered the customer who visited the particular bar was when he had to pay extra 20 cents every time the waiter brought something to the table.

He was so incensed by the amount Hermoso paid, that published the evidence in the Twitter in November last year and quickly went viral. In fact, this particular post became the occasion so that other customers who found themselves at bar to follow his tactics by raising excessive charges, as they characterized them on social media.

He posted: “Something strange happened to us a few days ago in Benavente posting the receipts with the extra ‘absurd’ charges.

“Every time the waiter came to the terrace table to bring something: beer, tapa… he charged us 20 cents” he wrote and added “the drop that the glass overflowed it was the euro he charged us for cutlery to cut a toast we had ordered.’

Speaking to Spanish Newsthe bar officials stated that it is common tactic to exist extra charge to serve customers on the terrace. For the particular post making the rounds on the internet, they claimed that the extra charge only applied to drink orders and not every time the waiter came to the table.

One person said: “They charged me for cutlery service and the most amazing thing was that we ordered a lot of beers and they charged us 20 cents for every ‘visit’ the waiter had to our table to bring them.

Another customer said: “I have to change owner, now they charge you for every time a waiter serves you.’ To which post his owner was forced bar to answer: “The waiter charges for each service.

“Every time you are served a drink on the terrace, there is an additional charge of 20 cents, maybe it would be easier if we put a total price, but we think it is better that you know what you are paying and we think that is your judgment” he noted and added ” sure if you told him waiter would explain it to you, It will not happen again. We will fix what is wrong. We want our bar to be a place of enjoyment and not leave angry, not because of the price we understand to be fair, but because the way of charging was misunderstood” explained the owner of this bar.

Some of the customers didn’t just express their anger about the prices but also talked about “illegal” charges.

One person said: “ The extra charge at terrace is normal, but I’ve freaked out with cutlery. As they tell me, I should have called the municipal authorities and asked for compensation.”

“Charging 4.5 euros for a beer can be expensive or cheap depending on how one looks at it but charging for every time the waiter goes out on the terrace or for a piece of cutlery is illegal” wrote another guest.

“One solution would be to tell the waiter not to bring the order in small drops, to bring the whole order to me at once, so they would only charge 20 cents. Although the perfect solution would be to NEVER GO TO THIS RESTAURANTsomeone else wrote.

However, there have been some customers who seem to agree with the bar’s tactics, writing: “Well at first it’s shocking… but if you think about it, the prices aren’t expensive and then there’s the typical family: can you bring me a straw for the child? Can you bring me another fork that I dropped on the floor? ….to think before calling him waiter 200 times».
